LEVERAGING COVID-19 INVESTMENTS TO STRENGTHEN HEALTH SYSTEMS IN AFRICA

July 2021: Africa’s carbon emissions are small relative to other regions today but are expected to contribute 18% of total emissions growth by 2050 under consistent business conditions. In light of these projections and the forthcoming Africa COP 27 in 2022, the UN High-level Champions Team (HLC) is supporting the transition of Africa’s energy sector to renewables as part of its broader mandate to help prevent global temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius relative to vs. pre-industrial levels as called for in the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Dalberg has partnered with the HLC as part of the firm’s climate coalition pledge to analyze the renewable energy landscape in Africa and identify potential pathways to achieve the goals of both universal access to energy and a future energy mix that would meet the targets specified in the Paris Agreement. Dalberg has authored a report that is designed to facilitate and accelerate a transition to clean energy with guidance on setting up policy frameworks and incentives that attract the right players and projects for the deployment of new renewable energy systems in Africa.

SAFE HANDS: A MULTI-STAKEHOLDER COALITION FOR CRISIS RESPONSE

When Covid-19 hit Africa in 2o2o, discussions centered around capabilities of the continent’s public health systems, measures to mitigate the spread of the pandemic and the resulting economic impact with governments unable to finance the social safety net support required to ensure people did not have to travel to work.

This resulted in the Safe Hands initiative, a mission-driven alliance of African companies and community-based organizations focused on providing a first line of defense against Covid-19. The initaitive would see Dalberg draw from internal capabilities available in the country to leverage on local knowledge, talent, and idled capacity towards tackling the pandemic. Dalberg’s Nairobi team served as the operating basecamp, while Dalberg Catalyst, a U.S. non-profit under the Dalberg Group umbrella, served as the fiscal sponsor for Safe Hands Kenya.

To date, Safe Hands Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania have collectively reached millions of citizens by rapidly deploying sanitation products and critical public health information to protect vulnerable communities while also sustaining livelihoods.
